Up to 200 phone boxes to be axed

BT says the number of calls made from pay phones has dropped
Managers at British Telecom say they need to get rid of nearly 200 of Cornwall's 1,000 phone boxes.

It says the number of calls made from pay phones has dropped significantly.

Notices will be placed in the kiosks which are no longer profitable and members of the public will be asked for their views on the possible closures.

Although residents in many areas say they are concerned, managers at BT are confident they will get to have their say about which ones are kept.

Proven need

Director of BT Pay Phones Paul Hendron said: "Over the past number of years, we've seen quite an increase in the use of mobile phones and the penetration of fixed lines in peoples' houses.

"A natural consequence of that is that we've seen a decline in the use of payphones."

Mr Hendron says they are committed to leaving pay phones where there is a proven need for customers.

BT says it will be in touch with the local authorities and parish councils where boxes are earmarked for removal. The consultation period will last for about two months.
