Health debt crisis is discussed
The health minister is being urged to help ease the financial crisis facing Cornwall's health services.

Rosie Winterton met Cornwall's health chief on Monday to discuss possible solutions to the 31m debt facing health services in the county.

Ms Winterton had talks with the chief executive of the South West Strategic Health Authority, Thelma Holland.

She also met Cornish MPs Andrew George, Paul Tyler and Matthew Taylor, who organised the meeting.

Historic debts

Mr Taylor, the Liberal Democrat MP for Truro and St Austell, has warned that Cornwall's NHS will face drastic cuts if a solution cannot be found to ease the financial crisis.

The 31m debts were passed on to the county's new health trusts when they took over from the old health authority.

The three Liberal Democrat MPs say they want some of these historic debts to be written off.

Mr Taylor also drew the minister's attention to the shortage of NHS dentists, both in mainland Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
