The island projects are to be closely monitored

Glass bottles and jars, presently making up a third of the waste, are to be crushed and used as aggregate.

The St Martin's project represents a new co-ordinated plan for rubbish on the island.

It is hoped that if it is successful it will help provide a solution which can be used across all of Cornwall.

The glass recycling will free up space on the regular rubbish boat to St Mary's for more plastics, which can be destroyed in an incinerator rather than burned in the open air, which reduces pollution.

Small food digesters and sealed unit composters have been given to householders and to a local hotel to deal with food waste.

The projects are being closely monitored for smells, noise and effectiveness.
