A stone and a bench were laid to remember Steve Roberts |
Friends and family of a soldier who was killed in Iraq have marked the first anniversary of his death. Sgt Steve Roberts, 33, of Bradford and originally from Wadebridge, Cornwall was shot dead during an attack by Iraqi dissidents outside Basra.
He had handed back his body armour while serving with the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment because there were not enough.
A granite memorial stone was laid at Egloshayle Parish Church, Cornwall, where some of his ashes are buried.
In January, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said he was "extremely sorry" Sergeant Roberts lacked the proper body armour.
Sergeant Roberts' widow, Samantha, called for Mr Hoon to quit, saying he had "blood on his hands".
As part of the memorial, a bench has been put at Portquin Bay, one of Sergeant Roberts' favourite places in Cornwall.
His mother, Marion Chapman, said it was a day to reflect on her son and his life, not on the Iraq war and the controversy surrounding it.
