A deal has been agreed with the developer after two years of talks |
A new NHS dental surgery in Liskeard, Cornwall, is being provided by the local council and a housing developer. The 350,000 surgery on council land in Charter Way will offer places for more than 6,000 patients.
The announcement came as a conference to tackle the serious shortage of dentists in Cornwall and Devon was being held in St Mellion in Cornwall.
There are only 540 dentists in the two counties serving a population of 1.5 million.
Cornwall's critical shortage of NHS dentists was highlighted last month by the response to a new surgery opening in Liskeard.
Council 'thrilled'
In just two days, 3,500 people registered with South African Theo Bellingan.
Caradon council agreed the deal for the new dentistry after two years of discussions.
The practice could be open in June next year following agreement on Wednesday with Concise Construction, which is building 450 homes in the Maudlin Farm area of Liskeard.
Jerry Masters, head of technical services, said: "We are thrilled that we can now secure the funding to go ahead and build."
Discussions were under way with a local dentist to take over the practice.
He said: "We are very lucky that we have been able to attract someone to provide an NHS dentistry in Liskeard, and we are very optimistic that this will work."
