Animal magic for Valentine's Day
Mia and Mike Newquay Zoo's Asian short-clawed otters
Mia and Mike, Asian short-clawed otters, are available for adoption
Cornish romantics are being offered an unusual alternative to giving chocolates or a dozen red roses to their loved one this Valentine's Day.

While a pair of sloths may not normally top the list of romantic gifts, they are just one set of animal pairs being offered for adoption by Newquay Zoo this month.

The zoo is offering a 10 discount for anyone adopting an animal pair before 14 February.

As well as Hoffman's sloths Bottoms Up and Slow Jo, Asian short-clawed otters Mia and Mike and red-footed tortoises Bonnie and Clyde are all available for adoption.

'Fun idea'

The money from adoptions is used for animal food, veterinary care, upgrading of enclosures and conservation research.

Adopters have their name displayed on a plaque near to the enclosure and are sent a photograph of the adopted animal

Michelle Turton, from the zoo, said: "We think this is a fun idea which offers people something a bit different and they can support Newquay Zoo in the process."

There are a number of projects currently under way at the zoo, which became a charity at the start of February.

A new tortoise enclosure is being built and the Tropical House rainforest exhibit is being refurbished to feature jungle temple ruins and exotic plants from the Eden Project.

Work is also being carried out on an extension to the cafe overlooking the lake.
