The Royal Mint will launch the coin in January 2004 |
Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick is to be commemorated on the new 2 coin. The Royal Mint is producing the coin to mark the bicentenary of the world's first steam railway locomotive trip.
Trevithick built his locomotive for the Welsh Penydarren Railroad.
He will join a select band of scientists commemorated on money, including Michael Faraday, Guglielmo Marconi and Sir Isaac Newton.
The Cornish engineer built the first steam car in 1801, but it was in February 1804 in Wales that the first locomotive puffed into the history books.
The Royal Mint will launch the coin in January 2004.
Stamped around the image of the 1804 engine will be the words "invention", "industry" and "progress".
