Sewage plans turned down

Planning officials said steps had been taken to avoid problems
Plans for a controversial plan for a sewage treatment works in a picturesque Cornish village have been turned down by county councillors.

The scheme, submitted by South West Water for Portscatho on the Roseland Peninsula, had angered many local people.

Residents were worried about the smell and the impact on the area during construction.

However, planning officers say South West Water is likely to appeal against the decision.

Casting vote

In the plans, the treatment works and pumping station would serve the villages of Portscatho and Gerrans.

Planning officials did say the water company has taken significant steps to avoid problems and urged county councillors to consider the long-term benefits of the project.

Last month, the council's planning committee failed to reach a decision over the scheme.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the planning committee had the casting vote and used it to turn down the application.
