Mr Pendray's business can house up to 148 dogs and 70 cats |
A Cornish farmer forced to find other ways of generating profit from his 110-acre farm is celebrating the success of a project launched in August. Alan Pendray, who farms Tregarrick Mill Farm at Pelynt near Looe, realised his farm business alone would not generate sufficient income.
He decided that he had to diversify from farming to survive and hit upon the idea of opening a boarding kennels and cattery.
And since he opened Pelynt Boarding Kennels and Cattery in August the business - which can house up to 148 dogs and 70 cats - has been almost continually full.
'Remain competitive'
"Even though we only opened in August the boarding kennels have been full nearly every day," said Mr Pendray.
"I am delighted with the custom we have had."
Mr Pendray was helped by the Rural Diversification Capital Grant Initiative (RDCGI) , an Objective One fund, which provided 50% of the costs of the scheme.
The fund is run by Business Link Devon and Cornwall.
Business Link's Marilyn Pryor, said: "Farms have to target efficiency, add value and diversify in order to remain competitive in the current and future market.
"Mr Pendray is certainly on the way to doing that."
