The house is about 400 years old |
A house with one of the most romantic histories in Cornwall is up for sale. The property, at Flushing on the banks of the River Fal, was moved brick by brick to the county from Sussex when its owner fell in love with a Cornishman.
In the 1970s, part of its roof was destroyed by fire but it has now been restored to its former glory.
Its current owners are now on the move and it is up for sale with a guide price of about 2m.
Former glory
In 1919, the owner of the house, a native of Sussex, met and fell in love with a Cornish sea captain.
She could not bear to leave the family house, which is about 400 years old, so she asked her husband to move it.
So every brick and timber of the entire house was moved the 280 miles from Sussex to Cornwall.
"We don't exactly how it was transported here but I would guess by sea," said owner Roderick Roy.
"It's one of the only houses I know that's been moved ostensibly most of the length on the country ," said Nigel Stubbs of Miller Countrywide Estate Agents.
"It took place at the whim of a lady called Joan Beech."
