New lifeboat named
Penlee lifeboat
The new lifeboat has a top speed of 25 knots
A new Penlee lifeboat was named at a ceremony in Newlyn on Tuesday.

The Severn class vessel replaced the Mabel Alice, which has been serving at the station since the Penlee lifeboat disaster 22 years ago, when eight crewmen of the Solomon Browne lost their lives.

With a top speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 miles, the new lifeboat will dramatically increase the Penlee lifeboat station's effectiveness.

The 17 metre-long all-weather Severn class lifeboats are the largest in the RNLI fleet.

The 2m boat was named Ivan Ellen after the couple who provided a substantial bequest to the RNLI.

Crew members said they were sad to see Mabel Alice go but are delighted with the new vessel.

The RNLI has also invested in new pontoons so the crew no longer have to use a small boat to get on board.
