Conservation area doubled in size

Many areas of Ely are included in the larger conservation area
A city's conservation area is to double in size in response to feedback from residents and local organisations.

Councillors at East Cambridgeshire District Council have unanimously voted to expanc a protected area in Ely.

Land around engineering firm Standens, the rail station, city centre and the whole of Roswell Pits is included.

Peter Moakes, chairman of the strategic development committee, said: "We can now protect buildings, historic views and ensure harmonious development."

Growth will continue within the conservation area boundaries, the council pledges.

"It simply means new developments must preserve or enhance the character of the area," Mr Moakes said.

"We would like to stress that including the whole of the Roswell Pits in the conservation area will not protect the area from development.

"This would best be achieved through designating the whole area as a Site of Scientific Special Interest. That would be more appropriate and protective but is beyond the district council's powers."
