A clergyman answered a knock at his door to find a man returning silverware taken from his church.

The silverware was taken from St. Mary's church in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire,in June.

The man told Reverend Richard Darmody he had not been involved in the theft but knew who was and was "disgusted" they had stolen from a church.

Rev Darmody said: "I am amazed but happy to have the silverware returned to the church."

He said: "To my absolute astonishment a man came and knocked at my door.

"Out of a holdall he produced all the silver that had been stolen.

"He was absolutely disgusted that they had stolen from the church and he made it his business to return to us the stolen silver.

"It's a good news story and restores a sense of hope. This is a very small congregation and it has given them a tremendous lift."
