The newly opened domestic abuse court at Peterborough |
A court has opened in Peterborough to deal only with domestic abuse cases. The move is part of a pilot scheme to see whether a specialist magistrates' court could bring more convictions.
The court has its own dedicated legal team, specialist advisors to help those taking part and separate waiting areas for victims and defendants.
Pc Deirdre Reed, who counsels victims, said: "Many are traumatised by the thought of giving evidence but we hope it will be easier than a normal court."
It is also hoped that the court will encourage victims of domestic abuse or violence to bring cases.
Offer feedback
Richard Crowley, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "It's never easy to be a victim of crime and it's worse when the perpetrators of that crime may be the father of your children, your spouse or the person you've lived with for a very long time.
"People here can get help while going through the process and with a little support they can often get the justice they deserve."
Pc Reed said: "There will be police officers present in court to monitor proceedings and that is a first.
"They will be able to tell the victim what is going on and bring them feedback."
If the pilot scheme is a success it will be expanded to Huntingdon and Cambridge in the next two years.
