New homes plan for barracks land
Building work
Up to 10,000 new homes are planned for a former barracks site
A disused barracks covering an area of 288 hectares is to be incorporated into a new town north of Cambridge.

English Partnerships, a regeneration agency, has bought Oakington Barracks site from the government for 100m.

The site will be part of a new town called Northstowe, to be built five miles from the centre of Cambridge.

Up to 10,000 new homes will be built on land including the former airfield near Longstanton, to reduce pressure on the Cambridge housing market.

The government and developers said the homes would help meet a local shortage of new and affordable homes.

Margaret Ford, chairman of English Partnerships, said: "The land at Oakington will make a significant contribution to Northstowe, where a new and sustainable community offering homes, amenities, jobs and open space is planned in an area of housing need."
