MRI scanners have been found to be twice as effective as x-rays in spotting breast cancer. Cambridge Breast Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital has published a study that found MRI is twice as sensitive as an x-ray when testing high risk women.
The team studied 838 women, at high risk from breast cancer, aged 35 to 49.
They were offered annual MRI or x-ray mammography and screened for two to seven years. Results were compared with the cancer cases diagnosed.
The study found breast MRI scans offer high risk women a chance of early diagnosis.
Breast cancer experts now hope that, despite its cost, this type of screening will be made available to them by the NHS.
