Darlow's Farm is adjacent to the Woodwalton Fen

Darlow's farm in Woodwalton, which was bought by English Nature in 2002, is to receive �94,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This latest award will finance raising water levels on the land to encourage wetland plants to spread.

The Great Fen Project aims to reconnect the nature reserves of Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen creating 37km of wetland.

'Super reserve'

The farm has already been awarded �364,000 over the last three years.

Darlow's Farm is adjacent to the Woodwalton Fen and enlarges the existing nature reserve by 40%.

The grant will also finance seeding some areas with a mixture of grass seed, while leaving the land to regenerate naturally in others.

Although large parts of the Cambridgeshire fens were drained in the 17th Century, the Great Fen, as it is known, once stretched from the Wash in Cambridgeshire to Lincolnshire in the north.

The aim is to eventually create a reed-covered wetland super-reserve of 3,000 hectares.
