Cambridge University could close its architecture department |
The future of a university architecture department is expected to be decided on Wednesday after it was accused of failing to reach high enough standards. Cambridge University authorities say the quality of the department's research is not good enough.
Administrators are expected to decide if the department with 150 students and about 100 postgraduates should close.
Students and leading architects have condemned closure proposals for the 100-year-old department.
Comedian Griff Rhys Jones joined 1,000 students trying to stop the closure last month because his 20-year-old son is one of its students.
Closure recommendation
Mr Rhys Jones said since the targets were "arbitrary" and under review, the school should not be closed.
A spokesman for the university said: "The department has so far made insufficient progress towards meeting Cambridge standards in terms of research quality.
"Accordingly, the board has recommended to the school that closure of the department and redeployment of the staff to other allied departments would be justified."
The school has an average of 8.5 people bidding for each available place.
