A Cambridge company has unveiled a new weapon in the battle to prevent the spread of superbugs in hospitals. Developers at BES Decon say their product, Sterinis, can destroy germs in hard to reach places, such as the inside of computers.
The device destroys germs by attacking them with tiny particles of disinfectant in a dry mist.
Hospital-acquired infections are thought to account for 5000 deaths each year in the UK.
Dry fog diffusion
The high death toll can be partially explained by the fact that traditional methods of disinfecting surgical devices and surface areas are only partially effective.
The dry fog diffusion technology is able to disinfect any surface and neutralise super-bug black spots, even those that are impossible to reach by hand.
These include the undersides of beds, the insides of equipment such as computers and tables, table tops, lockers, and cupboards.
