Soham appeal fund nears 85,000
The Chapmans and the Wells
The schoolgirls' parents were given a portion of the money raised
An appeal fund set up after the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman has raised nearly 85,000.

The fund was set up by two businesswomen in Soham, Cambs, shortly after the two 10-year-olds were found dead in August 2002.

The aim was to raise money for local community groups and the families of the two girls.

A spokeswoman for the Cambridge Building Society said the families have so far received a total of 36,000.

Another 24,000 has been shared amongst community organisations such as Scouts, Guides and churches in Soham.

Funds for 'local community needs'

The spokeswoman said the trustees of the fund had not determined how the rest would be distributed among local groups and charities.

"The aim of the appeal was to raise money in order to serve local community needs in ways which recognise the tragedy of what happened and the generosity of those who responded to the appeal.

"The fund has not yet been officially closed, although donations are no longer encouraged."

Ian Huntley, 29, has been jailed for life for murdering Holly and Jessica and his former girlfriend, Maxine Carr, 26, was given three-and-a-half years for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
