Villagers threaten camp protest
Cottenham travellers' site
Traveller families have lived at Smithy Fen for 40 years
Villagers fighting against expansion of a travellers' site are considering setting up camp outside the Deputy Prime Minister's home in protest.

Residents in Cottenham said they had become frustrated because John Prescott, minister with responsibility for planning, will not meet them.

Spokesman Terry Brownbill said: "We are considering turning up at his various homes in caravans and setting up camp."

A travellers' site has existed near Cottenham for 40 years.

But residents said the site was expanding because of scores of illegal campsites, and claimed Smithy Fen could soon house 8,000 people.

Travellers at the site dispute villagers' estimates about the number of people at the development.

More than 1,000 villagers had threatened to withhold their council tax if the site continued to expand.

They have now agreed to drop their tax protest and work alongside local councillors in trying to persuade Mr Prescott to take note of their concerns.
