About 300 tenant farmers now cultivate land in Cambridgeshire |
People who want to set up their first farm are being sought by Cambridgeshire County Council to work the land. The county's Farms Estate is offering two agricultural holdings in Wisbech and Soham to new tenants.
The estate has more than 300 tenant farmers working more than 30,000 acres of land, shops, horse liveries, sheep dairies and a children's nursery.
Manager John Macmillan, said: "These farms are a rare opportunity...the response so far has been excellent."
The tenant farms are a continuation of an effort began after World War I, when they were offered by the government to ex-servicemen.
The council says many of the farms are currently being cultivated by descendents of those veterans.
The land holdings being offered are Cranwell Farm in Wisbech, which includes a house and modern farm buildings and Triangle Farm, Soham, which has a house, glass houses, poly tunnels and traditional buildings and grass land.
Details of the land and buildings are available on the county council's website and at their offices in Cambridge.
The applications cost 10 and the deadline is 15 October.
Prospective new tenants will be interviewed during the week beginning 25 October.
