Battle to stop rat run bus route
Union Lane bus route
Union Lane is being used by buses for the first time
Bus company Stagecoach admits it made mistakes when it began a new bus route using narrow roads in Cambridge.

Angry residents in Union Lane, Chesterton, are campaigning for a U-turn on the route which has 72 buses a day using the road.

They say were not properly consulted when the C4 and C5 routes combined.

Stagecoach says it will not withdraw the service but has not ruled out changes after listening to what residents have to say.

The road, which is two-way and has car-parking on both sides, had a reputation as a rat-run before the new bus route began operating.

We will listen to what those residents have to say and we will see if there are alternatives that satisfy everyone
Stagecoach managing director Andy Campbell
People living in the street of terraced homes say the buses are making life very difficult.

"Morning and evening it is chaotic. This morning there were three buses in this road at one time," said Kathleen Taylor, of Union Street residents' campaign.

Managing director for the company in Cambridge, Andy Campbell, said the authorities had raised no objections to the proposed route.

"We carried out a risk assessment before we decided to operate a service down the road.

"We will listen to what those residents have to say and we will see if there are alternatives that satisfy everyone," he added.
