The public face of the Church of England is being given a new look by a Cambridgeshire vicar who loves to smoke, drink and skinny dip. The Reverend Peter Owen-Jones, a former advertising executive, is to front a television a show on Christian history.
In one of the episodes of 'The Battle for Britain's Soul', the vicar of Harlton Church appears naked as he prepares for a quick dip in the sea.
The programme on BBC2 on Saturday at 1910 GMT could raise a few eyebrows.
But Mr Owen-Jones, who has admitted smoking cannabis in his youth, said he is no stranger to problems.
"Renaissance man"
"When I first arrived here there were some very difficult times, but I think we have grown to accept and love each other for who we are," he said.
"As for the hierarchy of the Church of England, let's just say we have an interesting relationship and leave it at that."
The program charts the progress of the religion, from when Christianity first came to Britain in the dark ages right through to modern times.
Mr Owen-Jones is also an author who gets his inspiration while down his local pub where he is described as a "renaissance man" with a "liberal and open mind".
