A Cambridgeshire detective and a Crown Prosecution Service administrator have appeared in court charged with conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Detective Constable Brian Stevens, 42, and Louise Austin, 32, appeared at Luton Crown Court.
The pair spoke only to confirm their personal details during the hearing.
No plea was taken, and the case was adjourned until 24 November.
Mr Stevens and Ms Austin were then released on conditional bail.
They were told they must not have any contact with each other.
Mr Stevens counselled the family of schoolgirl Jessica Chapman who was found dead with her friend Holly Wells near the Cambridgeshire village of Soham in August 2002.
