Michael Wheeler met the girls through internet chat rooms |
The government's top law officer is considering an appeal against a three-year jail sentence given to a paedophile who "groomed" girls for sex over the internet. The Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC, has asked Crown Prosecution Service lawyers to report on the case of Michael Wheeler.
Wheeler, 36, from Cambridge, was jailed last week after admitting having sex with two 13-year-old girls.
A spokeswoman for Lord Goldsmith said: "The Attorney is concerned that on first impressions the sentence in the case seems unduly lenient.
"He wants to examine the full facts of the case before deciding whether to refer the case to the Court of Appeal."
Law exploited
Lord Goldsmith has 28 days after the original sentence in which to launch an appeal.
Wheeler admitted having sex with the girls after meeting them in an internet chat room.
Detectives believe he deliberately exploited the current law on sentencing by waiting until the girls turned 13 before having sex with them.
The maximum sentence for sex with a child under the age of 13 is life.
An electronics engineer, Wheeler has already been in custody for seven months, and could be freed within a year.
Legislation due to come into force in the autumn would give judges greater power when dealing with people trying to groom children using the internet..
