Player in fight probe suspended

David Pipe made 141 appearances for Notts County before moving to Bristol

Bristol Rovers footballer David Pipe has been suspended over allegations he broke a 29-year-old man's skull with a bottle in a late-night brawl.

Mr Pipe, 25, was originally arrested for assault after the incident in Bristol's Park Street on 16 September.

"In the light of the serious incident concerning David Pipe we have taken the decision to suspend the player," said club chairman Nick Higgs.

He added: "Obviously the club can make no further comment at this stage."

International cap

Mr Pipe was bailed to reappear on 28 September.

The injured 29-year-old was taken the city's Frenchay Hospital following the incident at 0400 BST.

Midfielder Mr Pipe is a former Wales Under-21 captain and has one full international cap.

He joined Bristol Rovers in July 2007 from Notts County for £50,000.

He did not feature in the squad for Saturday's game at Brentford.
