'Oyster cards' planned for city

Plans for a system for First Bus users in Bristol similar to London's Oyster card scheme have been endorsed by the company's new managing director.

Justin Davies told BBC Radio Bristol the scheme, also due to roll out in south Wales, was the "right way to go".

"I can't set a time because I simply don't know where we are with such a project," he added.

Oyster cards are used in London to allow commuters to pre-pay for travel across different modes of transport.

Mr Davies is now in charge of bus transport for First in the former Avon and Somerset area.

"In South Wales we are just about to introduce a smart card system in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly based first of all on concessions, but then moving to all customers.

"That's very much the way we want to move here as well," he said.
