Theatre supporters attend meeting
Bristol Old Vic
The theatre was temporarily closed in August for a refit
Supporters of the Bristol Old Vic turned out in their hundreds at a public meeting to discuss the future of the troubled theatre on Thursday.

There was standing room only at the meeting to gauge support for proposals to reopen the building, which has been hit by a repairs and a cash crisis.

The meeting was called by the managing director of the Watershed Media Centre, Dick Penny.

Mr Penny is considering an invitation to become Old Vic executive chairman.

The theatre closed last summer for a 7m refit, amid financial difficulties.

The Bristol Old Vic was 2m short of the requisite funding and a campaign was started to make up the shortfall.

A statement from the Arts Council said: "Arts Council England remains totally committed to theatre being produced in Bristol and has set aside 1.25m for this purpose.

"We also remain hopeful that Bristol Old Vic will play an important part in helping to make that happen."
