This is the first public appeal the theatre has launched |
A Bristol theatre has launched an appeal for funds, just as its city rival is to close because of production overspending and falling audiences. The Tobacco Factory said it has a shortfall in funding for the coming season, and is asking audiences to help in any way they can.
In May, the Bristol Old Vic said it would close for 15 months to complete its 7m refurbishment programme.
It later admitted its finances were at the "brink of failure".

Helen Palmer, chair of the Tobacco Factory Arts Trust, said: "We have put out this appeal not only to ensure that we survive but also to be able to continue to offer the quality and diverse work for which we have become so well known."
"We have no reserves and are just trying to put the situation right.
"We must become more sustainable to be sure of staying here.
"We are in a state where we need money right now," she added.
More than two-thirds of the theatre's funds come from ticket sales and audiences.
It has received some money from the city council, and is applying to the Arts Council for funds.
It is also talking to businesses about possible partnership and sponsorship deals.
But audiences remain central to the fundraising drive, and they are being heavily targeted by the theatre either to buy more tickets, donate cash or introduce new audience members or possible sponsors.
