Beckham surprises school children
David Beckham

Pupils at a school in Bristol received a big surprise when David Beckham arrived to teach them football skills.

A selection of City Academy pupils were kept behind after lessons to meet the superstar. They were not told it was going to be him.

One pupil said: "It was a big surprise as I was expecting someone more local - I wasn't expecting David Beckham."

He was there to promote his School Zone website which provides a free coaching guide for teachers and pupils.

One girl said: "I thought whoa, he's actually here at our school and I thought our school is actually really good how they got him here."

'Happy bunch'

Beckham spent several hours teaching the children football skills and educating them about health and fitness.

"It's important for kids to have both the education and obviously the sports facilities and they seem to have that here and they seem a happy bunch of kids as well so that's important," he said.

The website is an offshoot of David Beckham's football academy which has so far held educational days for more than 12,000 school children.

"I have seen first-hand how boys and girls respond to the coaches at the academy.

"I am extremely proud of the work we have achieved to date with schools and community groups who visit the academy for free and I am pleased that now every school will get the chance to sample what we provide," he said.
