Agency slams false radio report
A4 road closure sign
The A4 will remain closed for a further eight weeks
The Highways Agency has spoken out after a radio station advised listeners to drive through road works claiming they were visiting local businesses.

An agency spokesman said three sources had confirmed reports of the station encouraging its listeners to drive through the A4 roadworks at Saltford.

The road - the major route between Bath and Bristol - is undergoing roadworks meaning eight more weeks of closure.

The spokesman condemned the station's action as 'irresponsible'.

'Local residents'

"This is effectively encouraging people to break the law," he added. "We would like to remind everyone that the A4 is legally closed to through traffic at Saltford and access is only for local residents and visitors to businesses."

Highways Agency project manager Dave Sledge added: "The decision to use a complete closure to through traffic was taken after consultation with local elected representatives.

"Advising people to give inaccurate information and drive through the works is irresponsible.

"Extra traffic passing through the works area risks delaying the completion of the work and endangers the safety of the workforce."
