Diabetes study seeking volunteers
Health experts in Bristol are seeking 750 volunteers to take part in a new study exploring a link between rising levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Researchers will be looking at whether exercise as well as dietary advice can help patients.

United Bristol Healthcare Trust said it would be the biggest trial of its kind in the world.

Recruits will be people aged 30 to 80 who have been diagnosed with the condition in the last six months.

They will be allocated to one of three groups:

  • 110 participants will receive normal care for type 2 diabetes

  • 320 will receive dietary advice every month

  • 320 will be asked to wear an activity monitor all day every day for a year.

Dr Rob Andrews, consultant senior lecturer in exercise, diabetes and endocrinology, said: "Although we know a lot about how diet can control glucose levels and improve blood pressure and cholesterol, very little is known about how or if exercise affects these factors.

"This study, for the first time, aims to definitively answer these questions.

"With the prevalence of type 2 diabetes predicted to double in the UK by 2013, clarification of this information is urgently needed."
