Debate over city's slavery role
Academics are to take part in a debate over whether or not the city of Bristol should apologise for its role in the slave trade.

The public debate will take place at the city's British Empire and Commonwealth Museum on Wednesday night.

Professor A C Grayling will chair the debate with the audience invited to put questions and opinions to the panel.

They will also be able to vote on whether Bristol should apologise for its role in the slave trade.

Liverpool City Council unreservedly made a similar apology in 1999, although recently the Church of England declined to atone for its role in the practice.

Recently developers backed down over a plan to rename the Broadmead area of Bristol Merchants' Quarter as this was considered potentially offensive.
