 Bristolians could face council tax rises |
New figures from the city council show that Bristolians are recycling more of their household waste than before. In June, 1,582 tonnes of rubbish was collected for recycling: an extra 460 tonnes compared with June last year.
Councillor Gary Hopkins said: "This is great. I personally want to thank Bristol residents for rising to this challenge."
Three and a half thousand tonnes of rubbish are sent from the city to landfill sites every week.
Government targets mean that local authorities failing to reduce the amount of rubbish being sent to landfills will be penalised.
By 2010 the council could face fines of up to �27m.
As such, it has recently introduced a new scheme to collect rubbish and recyclable material on the same day.
About 13% of waste is currently recycled in Bristol and this has to increase to 27% by the middle of next year to avoid fines and extra council tax.
