Landmark 4.8m given to cemetery

The site has many listed buildings and centuries-old graves
The historic Arnos Vale cemetery in Bristol has been awarded a grant of 4.8m for restoration work.

The Heritage Lottery cash should secure the future of the Grade II listed site after 20 years of local campaigning.

It will be used to restore buildings and monuments, improve landscaping and create educational, family history and community facilities.

The cemetery was compulsorily purchased by Bristol City Council in 2003, and is now managed by a trust.

Victorian chapels

The grant represents 75% of the total money being put into the project, with the rest being provided by Bristol City Council and English Heritage.

The 45-acre site includes several Victorian chapels and centuries-old graves.

Restoration of the West Lodge, one of two Grade II listed buildings at the main entrance, is already complete and will officially reopen as a visitor reception centre in the spring.

Some of the site will be managed as a nature and wildlife reserve.

The award is the largest ever awarded to a cemetery restoration project by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
