Airport car park still in service
A man operating an unofficial car park site near Bristol Airport is refusing to close it.

Nick Ball, of The Oaks, Backwell, lost an appeal in November against an order requiring him to shut the car park.

He said: "We are still doing it. Why not? We have a problem with the noise and traffic so why shouldn't we make money out of it?"

North Somerset Council, which served the enforcement notices, said: "We are investigating and compiling evidence."

In November, six operators - including Mr Ball - of eight sites around the airport lost their appeals with the Bristol Planning Inspectorate against the enforcement notices, after two public inquiries.

'Loss of openness'

In 2003, the council refused retrospective permission to use the land for parking.

Mr Ball was required to shut his facilities by the end of 2004.

The Inspectorate said that rows of coloured vehicles "...resulted in a serious loss of openness causing an urban feel to the countryside" at The Oaks.

Councillor Peter Burden, said: "The council, with the support of local residents and the parish councils in the area, is committed to protecting the Green Belt from further damage by mass off-airport parking.

"It will pursue landowners who fail to respect the quality of the countryside around the airport."

The remaining operators were told they must stop by 20 January.

Notices were served on:

  • Mr GL Wedlake on The Old Forge, Felton; Lulscott, Felton; Hyatts Wood Rd, Backwell; Cross Paddocks and Sqaure Close, Felton

He told the BBC: "We have complied with the enforcement notices but are still operating [car parking] within the law and my son is appealing against one notice."

  • Mr R and Ms K-A Thatcher at the Airport Tavern, Lulsgate. Manager Neil Vincent said the Thatchers left the pub 18 months ago: "We don't offer any parking in the field - the subject of the order; only in the car park."

  • Mr AJ Lane at Cross Paddocks and Square Close, Felton. Andy Lane said: "We never ran car parking out of there - people were using the land opposite us which comes under the same address.

"We took over from the Thatchers at the Airport Tavern in January 2004 and left just before Christmas. They had the enforcement notice on the field there and it spilled over."

  • Mr JW Davis and Mr CJ Vowles at Freeman Farm, Felton. Unavailable for interview.

  • Mrs S Ashman, Mr R Ashman and Mr M Ashman at Goblin Combe Farm, Redhill. Unavailable for interview.
