Police were alerted to the stolen car in Hanham
Two escaped prisoners and a suspected robber were caught by police using an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system.

On 12 July police were alerted to a Vauxhall Tigra which had been stolen from the Hanham area of Bristol.

The car was followed by officers and a collision took place with an Audi.

The Tigra passenger was arrested and found to be a jail escapee as was the Audi passenger. The Audi driver was wanted for robberies in two counties.

'Three arrests'

Police said the 28-year-old, who was disqualified from driving, was wanted by police in Wiltshire and Somerset in connection with separate robberies.

The Audi passenger, a 22-year-old man, was found to be wanted for escaping from Dorchester Prison and also in connection with a theft in Bridgwater.

ANPR cameras capture registration plate details and cross-check them against databases.

If a vehicle is recognised the ANPR operator is alerted.

Superintendent Lawrie Lewis, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "This latest incident is an excellent example of how effective the ANPR system can be.

"As a result of one identification, we have arrested three people."
