Police target underage drinkers
Policeman with drink seized in a previous clampdown
A previous clampdown helped to cut anti-social behaviour
Underage drinkers are being targeted in a new summer campaign by police in South Gloucestershire.

Patrols will be stepped up in areas of Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury where youths are known to gather.

Anyone aged under 18 in possession of alcohol will have it seized and will be questioned about where it is from.

Letters will be sent to all licensed premises warning them to be extra careful about ensuring they do not sell drink to minors.

Anti-social problems

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards will also be involved in the operation, sending youngsters, under cover, to buy alcohol in pubs and off-licences.

Chipping Sodbury police sergeant Andy McIlrath said: "Many of the anti-social problems encountered over the school holidays can be directly linked to the use of alcohol.

"This action follows a successful operation last summer, where levels of anti-social behaviour were greatly reduced by the seizure of alcohol from young people."
