A cemetery in Bristol is to be a pilot for a new way of protecting Britain's heritage. Proposals for the system have been put together by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The Arnos Vale Cemetery, recently the subject of a protracted battle over ownership, is amongst the pilots being launched by English Heritage.
It will reassess the different features of the site, and draw up a management agreement to help with restoration.
Grade II listed
Richard Smith, chair of the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust said: "We are delighted to participate in this. It is an opportune time as we are about to embark on a restoration programme with English Heritage."
The Victorian cemetery featured in the BBC's "Restoration" series and includes a grade II listed park and garden, with listed tombs and chapels, within a conservation area.
The site was recently compulsorily purchased by Bristol City Council and is now vested in a trust.
The new scheme involves:
the creation of a single unified list, called the "List of Historic Sites and Buildings of England", that gives equal statutory recognition to all its components the establishment of statutory management agreements that allow for strategic management over the medium to long term
