Row erupts over travellers' site
The travellers site
The council says it will revisit the site
Plans for a permanent travellers' site in Bristol have again run into problems - more than three years after the land was bought by the city council.

The authority has recently voted to apply for a Home Office grant to refurbish the site in Ashton Vale.

But some Tory councillors have 'called in' the measure, referring it back to the scrutiny committee which could reignite the debate on the issue.

The committee had previously backed the plans, said the council leader.

'Site visit'

The site at South Liberty Lane had been used unofficially by travellers before the council stepped in and put a proposal to make it a permanent site into its local plan.

Some residents have protested against the idea, saying the site is not suitable and that they have not been adequately consulted.

Barbara Janke, leader of the council, told BBC News: "If the site is not suitable, or there is no longer a need, these factors will be taken into account.

"A site visit is planned."

The scrutiny committee could decide to take no action, or refer the whole matter back to the full council, or the Cabinet.
