A special safety course to help reduce the number of bikers killed on the roads, is being held by Avon and Somerset Police.

Officers say previous courses have helped cut down on the number of motorcyclists killed in the force area.

Eleven motorcyclists died on local roads in 2003, a reduction of nearly 33% on the year before.

The course, run at force headquarters in Portishead, is open to all riders living in the Avon and Somerset area.

The aim is to continue to bring the number of accidents down, with the help of specialist motorcycle police from the force's Road Policing Unit (RPU).

The course helps bikers improve riding skills and stay safe on the road.

PC Neill Sedgwick, of the RPU, said: " Many of the collisions that motorcyclists are involved in could have been prevented by better planning, observations and positioning."

The courses take place during three weekends in April and May.
