City's 120m to rebuild schools
Bristol City Council is to be given 120m to rebuild four of its secondary schools.

The cash - from a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) - will be spent on Brislington, Hartcliffe, Speedwell and Whitefield Fishponds schools.

It is part of the government's Building Schools for the Future project, piloted by Bristol and three other local education authorities.

Building work on the schools is due to be completed by 2006.

Councillor Peter Abraham said: "This is great news - many of our schools are now about 50 years old or more and are simply not up to the job.

"This will enable us to create purpose built, state-of-the-art facilities which will be second to none."

The councillor added: "Creating first-class schools has a major impact on improving pupils' motivation by providing them with a school to be proud of."
