A bouncer pushed his walkie-talkie into a student's face so hard it caused his eyeball to explode, a court has heard. David Lowe was celebrating the end of exams at Bristol's University of the West of England in the city's Lizard Lounge nightclub in June 2002 when the incident happened.
Afterwards, the student underwent four hours of surgery but was left blind in his left eye, disfigured and with fractures to his shoulder and carpet burns to his back.
The two bouncers involved deny the charges against them.
'Old rubbish'
Mr Lowe was asked to leave as he kept falling asleep in the nightclub.
When he failed to do so, Mr Lowe was approached by bouncers Martin White and Robert Handford.
Mr Handford began dealing with the man "reasonably well" by trying to stand him up and get him out.
But the court heard how, as Mr Lowe lay drunk on the floor, Mr White pushed his walkie-talkie into the student's eye.
Prosecuting, Robert Davies said this caused the eyeball to explode and the lens to eject from the eye.
Verbal threats
The jury heard how Mr Lowe was then dragged by the leg and belt by the two bouncers over steps and carpets out of the club "like a bag of old rubbish".
It is alleged that Mr White verbally threatened and swore at Mr Lowe and two other bouncers then helped to get him out on to the pavement outside.
Mr White, 26, of Elmdale Crescent, Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent, inflicting grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mr Handford, 45, of Chedworth Road, Horfield, Bristol, denies assaulting David Lowe, occasioning actual bodily harm.
The trial continues.
