A Bristol shopping centre is welcoming a special visitor this Christmas after it sponsored a police horse to patrol its streets. Broadmead, the newest member of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary's mounted section, will be keeping visitors to his namesake's shops safe.
The horse, whose equipment and kit has been paid for by the Broadmead shopping centre, will spend his time patrolling the city centre and Castle Park areas.
Broadmead will be accompanied on his tours of duty by Pc Ted Grabowski.
'Gentle giant'
Pc Grabowski said: "Broadmead has been undergoing a wide range of training to help him cope with the many situations he will face as a police horse.
"He is a real gentle giant but I am confident he will be able to cope in any situation from policing large crowds to public reassurance patrols around the city centre."
So far, Broadmead and Pc Grabowski have made about 12 arrests.
John Hirst, manager of the Broadmead shopping centre, said: "The support of the mounted section is very important and we are delighted to be able to name one of their horses 'Broadmead' - he will certainly be given the freedom of the shopping area."
