Somerfield is focusing on smaller stores |
Bristol-based supermarket group Somerfield, which includes Kwik Save, has reported a rally in sales after a major refurbishment programme. A total of 141 of 594 Somerfield stores have recently received investment, with a focus on smaller, convenience-style stores.
The company reported sales growth of nearly 1% in the 28 weeks to 8 November in comparison with the same period last year.
This includes a 2.2% improvement at the Somerfield chain.
Takeover bid
John von Spreckelsen, executive chairman, said: "The performance of the Somerfield stores continued to improve, benefiting from good growth achieved from the refit programme.
"The renewal programme is continuing with pace."
The group, which is the UK's sixth largest supermarket group, has been trying to win marketshare after hitting problems integrating Kwik Save, bought in 1998.
It was also recently the subject of a rejected 594m takeover bid by entrepreneurs John Lovering and Bob Mackenzie.
