Pupils 'miss out on free meals'

Hundreds of primary school children in North Yorkshire are missing out on free school meals every year, figures show.

County Caterers, the council's school catering arm, says up to 460 primary pupils daily are not claiming the free meals to which they are entitled.

The county council says this amounts to nearly 90,000 unclaimed meals a year.

With meals costing 1.80 a day, parents with two primary age children could be missing out on more than 340 of food for their children each year.

Families whose household income is less than 15,500 a year are eligible for the entitlement.

The county council says claiming free school meals also entitles families to claim uniform grants when their children transfer to secondary school.
