Pc Sharon Beshenivsky was shot while on duty in Bradford last year

Surgeons fought for almost 30 minutes to revive an unconscious policewoman after she was shot in the chest during a robbery, a court heard.

Pc Sharon Beshenivsky, 38, was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary after being shot outside the Universal Express travel agency last November.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that when she arrived at the hospital there was no sign of a pulse.

Five men are on trial accused of involvement in Pc Beshenivsky's murder.

Yusuf Abdillh Jamma, 20, Raza Ul-Haq Aslam, 25, Faisal Razzaq, 25, and his brother Hassan, 26, all deny murder.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 25, earlier admitted murdering Pc Beshenivsky, but denies firing the shot that killed her.

Shah, of no fixed address, also denies the attempted murder of Pc Teresa Milburn, who was also shot during the incident but survived.

'Almighty bang'

Mr Jamma is from Whitmore Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. Mr Aslam is from St Pancras Way, Kentish Town, north London.

Faisal Razzaq and his brother Hassan are both from Sebert Road, Forest Gate, east London.

Earlier Pc Milburn, 37, told the court how she had seen her friend collapse in front of her.

She said: "There was an almighty bang.

"I can see her head. It goes to the right, then to the left, and flops. Her arms flop to the side. Her body drops in front of me. Her knees go to the left and she goes straight down and collapses."

The jury heard how hospital staff tried desperately to resuscitate Pc Beshenivsky.

'Situation irretrievable'

Ambulance crews had alerted A&E staff and when she arrived at the hospital her condition was said to be "unconscious, pulseless and with fixed, dilated pupils".

Robert Smith QC, prosecuting, said that after initial resuscitation techniques and intravenous drips failed to revive her, a surgical procedure was carried out.

He told the court: "A decision was made that she should undergo a form of exploratory operation to her chest cavity.

"There was found to be a large amount of blood in the left side of her chest and damage to major blood vessels.

"Open cardiac massage was commenced. The situation was deemed to be irretrievable.

"A decision was made that Mrs Beshenivsky had not been resuscitated and she was pronounced dead at 4.25pm."
