Congregation offered comfy chairs
Church leaders want to make worshipping at Ripon Cathedral more pleasurable by replacing its hard wooden pews with more comfortable chairs.

The cathedral's advisory committee has agreed to rip out the pews providing the congregation approves the move.

A decision will be made in the new year following a public consultation.

A cathedral spokesman said chairs were already used in several cathedrals as they could be stacked away, were easier to move and much more comfortable.

Concert cushions

Lt Col Ian Horsford said they had not yet decided what type of chair would be used but they would definitely be an improvement on the current pews.

"Our pews are very uncomfortable because of the shape of them," he said.

"Hardened concert goers bring their own cushions because they know what they are like.

"Now there's a possibility for funding for the chairs we have to go back to the congregation to ask for their views on the idea."
