Police to attend Polish classes

Thames Valley Police force is organising language classes so officers can communicate with the growing Polish population in the area.

About 60 officers in Berkshire will be taking part in the six-week classes to learn basic Polish words and phrases.

The decision to offer the classes to officers follows the decision by a local paper in Reading to publish an edition in Polish.

It is estimated that there may be as many as 8,000 Poles living in Reading.

Ch Supt Brian Langston said: "If the lessons are a success and it means we can speak a few words or phrases when we meet Polish residents, I hope it will give them greater confidence in the police service as a whole and show that we will try new ways to get closer to our communities."

He said that some staff have now suggested running evening classes in other languages, such as Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi.
